Save Yourself
Pop-ups
and Spyware. The wicked little worms that lodge in our
computer, placed there
by underhanded web companies trying to make a buck. The
proper term is "spyware," but I tend to describe
it with four-letter words.
If you couldn’t tell, I recently got hit.
It happened while I was downloading music from a site that
I will not name, but if you were to guess Kazaa you would
be right.
That’s not the only place where you can get contaminated;
it's just the one I despise the most.
The days that followed were hell. Every time I booted up, my
browser would visit a cheesy websearch service, my unelected
homepage. At the same time, ads popped up every three minutes,
morning till night, without mercy. Finally it caught up to me.
I pulled away from the desk and shouted loud enough to rip the
sky in two. Somewhere in the distance, a dog barked.
It wasn’t just pop-ups either. There
were icons on my desktop and shortcuts in my task tray.
Spam poured into my inbox.
The spies were touching me in places where my bathing suit
covered.
I tried everything to purge the disease: I
dug through registration files, I even purchased McAfee
Spyware remover. NO LUCK!
I was about
to throw my PC out the window -- a common cause of
computer crashes -- when a friend recommended
Spyware
Nuker. I
was hoping we could nuke the people who invented spyware,
but it didn’t quite work that way. You just install the
program and scan.
I went through the process and found eight
worms that had eluded McAfee. Eight! I cleansed the
files and hit reboot, biting
my nails along the way. I couldn’t bear the letdown should
it fail. My desktop materialized and … and … nothing.
No ads, no web search homepage, no pop-ups with huge
boobie cleavage. I was free!
From what they tell me, I got lucky. Some
folks lose vital information like credit cards, social
security number, and, the mother of all personal information,
mother's
maiden name.
I can't tell you how good it feels to
be free. I've
been singing, "Ding Dong, the Glitch Is Dead." Pop-up
ads are the worst thing to happen since daytime TV, and
they must be stopped at any cost. I'm sharing my story
so that you can join the crusade.
Try a FREE scan with Spyware
Nuker it also
comes with other features like backups and auto-update,
but you'll discover those on your own. The important thing
is that we
can once again feel safe to explore even the sleaziest
reaches
of cyberspace.
